Lily Zheng
Passionate STEMist & High Schooler
Hey I'm Lily - a scorpio born on Halloween! I'm a Grade 10 student in Toronto, Canada. Starting in middle school, I have developed a strong interest in STEM, especially math and physics. I create the STEMists website with the hope that it can help STEM lovers like me find a home and learn something new! Read about my inspirations below!
Inspirations Behind STEMists
As someone super passionate about math and science, I always wanted to learn something new and challenging. However, I notice a significant lack of resources when it comes to high-level STEM materials that go beyond high school textbooks. Schools, especially whose student bodies are traditionally disadvantaged in STEM education, are usually not super supportive, and outside tutors are often very expensive. This causes great inequality for students who wish to get exposure to contest-level STEM yet lack the resources to. Additionally, being one of the few students super passionate about STEM in my school, I understand how hard finding someone to discuss advanced math concepts or intriguing scientific discoveries with can be. I realize that it is time for me to create a platform that provides free tutorials on contest-level STEM concepts and allows people build connections by discussing interesting theorems and problems.

Another inspiration behind posting one challenging math/science per day and encouraging people to post their solutions to the website originates from my observation of numerous math websites. A lot of websites and Youtube channels contain solutions to challenging problem sets. However, the 'official' solutions rarely cover all the possible approaches to one question. One of the best ways to learn math and science is to explore how different methods can solve the same question. Therefore, by allowing people to share their own solutions, viewers of the website are exposed to various perspectives that can potentially spark their own thoughts on the question.

On the last note, as a website created by a high schooler who is far from an expert in the competitive STEM field, it is not going to be perfect. So, please reach out and let me know if you think any contents need corrections/refinements. Your inputs are invaluable and it'll a great opportunity for both of us to learn and grow! ANYWAYS- THANKS FOR READING THIS AND HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY IN THE BEAUTIFUL STEM WORLD!
